When dealing with intelligent transportation systems, people generally think about a smart vehicle able to drive autonomously, follow the best route, and safely reach its destination. However, the ITS world embraces many transportation media, making the automotive world just one aspect of ITS research activities. In this installment, Enrico Piazza describes the results of the Vision project, which applied new technologies to airports. A system able to help move and route planes safely would not only improve airport safety but also enhance airport throughput.
