One of the many research programmes that have been launched worldwide in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) is "La Route Automatisee" (LaRA). This research programme is aimed at improving urban and extraurban mobility in France. In the current issue of the ITS Department -written in cooperation with the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Council (ITSC)- J.M.Blosseville and M.Parent describe their view of the future in France and how the LaRA programme is going to change the mability in their country. Next issues will focus on different research programmes worldwide and will try to describe the trends and prospectives for the future.
